External Relations Update – November 2020

Over the next several months, as we endeavor to make our External Relations team more accessible to all of our Santa Clara Law constituents and attempt to have our work reflect the valuable feedback we receive from the broader Santa Clara Law community, we will highlight efforts being made in each part of our division to achieve these goals in the Santa Clara Law Magazine. This month, we feature some of the outstanding work being done in the area of Alumni Relations by Kendra Livingston JD ’15, our Director of External Relations. 

New Documentary Short Focuses on the Work of Lizbeth Mateo JD ’16

Lizbeth Mateo JD ’16 and the fight for immigrants’ rights is the feature of a new documentary short by social impact studio Optimist. Directed by Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci, the film world premiered in the short competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and won best documentary at the 2020 Boston Short Film Festival. Produced by social impact studio Optimist, “The Undocumented Lawyer” follows attorney Lizbeth Mateo as she starts a law practice, hires four employees and takes an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution. However, Mateo also has no legal options to stay in the country as she is undocumented, having crossed the border illegally at 14. The film will air on HBO Latino and be available on HBO Max in March. 

Nov 17: Virtual Forum

This Virtual Forum will showcase three key experiential learning opportunities at Santa Clara Law. The Entrepreneurs’ Law Clinic, Katharine & George Alexander Community Law Center, and Northern California Innocence project not only provide Santa Clara Law students with real world experience, but they have a profound impact on their service to the community and to the legal profession.

Dec 2: An Introduction to the Global Privacy Regulatory Environment

The world of privacy/data protection has been evolving for the past 23 years and is based partially on history, partially on cultural norms, and partially on regulation. The evolution has accelerated rapidly since 2016 and is continuing to accelerate. In general, while there are key concepts and themes, each jurisdiction’s geographical operating environment tends to apply its own standards. Multiple sessions online starting at 11 am.
