1969 Dennis M. McNerney November 29, 2020. Born in San Francisco, Dennis grew up in Bakersfield. A graduate of Garces High School, he attended Santa Clara University where he met his wife, Joan, and earned a BA. After earning his law degree, he moved to Orange County and started his law career in the Public Defender’s office and eventually went into private practice with his partner, Gary Proctor. Together they started Juvenile Defenders and for 35 years he championed the legal defense of children and families. He enjoyed a good martini or glass of whiskey and a cigar and was a ruthless backgammon player. He is survived by his wife, Joan, his sister, three children, and six grandchildren.
1971 Brian D. Cunningham November 9, 2020. Born in Evanston, Illinois, Brian moved to California and attended UC Berkeley where he played Oski the Bear, the team mascot at football games. He earned a master’s degree in mathematics from UCLA and went on to earn a law degree at Santa Clara Law. After graduation, he opened his own law practice. He eventually felt the lure of the real estate investment business and retired from practicing law in 1978. A philanthropist at heart, he enjoyed advocating for people facing difficult challenges in life and he continued to give free legal advice and assistance to those in need. He was a pillar and long-time resident of the Gilroy community. A co-founder of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, he also proudly served on the Gilroy City Council as a Councilman for 5 years. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Cunningham (Schager), three children, and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, his sister, and many nieces and nephews.
1974 Cliff C. Kemper November 10, 2020. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Cliff moved to Long Beach, California and attended Jordan High School thereafter enlisting in the Army and serving in the Vietnam War. Upon his return home, he graduated from San Jose State University and later Santa Clara Law. He spent nearly 40 years practicing law as a defense attorney, prosecutor, and also spent several years in the private sector. He retired from the Madera County District Attorney’s office in 2013. Thereafter, Cliff became a regular at Sequoia Brewing Company in Fresno where he developed many lifelong friendships that he cherished dearly. Cliff is survived by his daughter, two sons, two younger sisters, and two grandchildren.
1980 Nancy Wright The Santa Clara Law community mourns the loss of our retired colleague who passed away on December 20 from illness. “We shall miss her warmth and smiles,” said Interim Dean Anna Han, a longtime colleague and friend. “Nancy was a champion of social justice and our many programs stand in testament to her work at our school.” Read more.
1984 Michael “Mike” Dillon passed away on December 2, 2020 from complications of gastrointestinal surgery. Throughout his career as general counsel of Adobe, Silver Spring Networks, Sun Microsystems, and ONI Systems, his motto was, “Get Shit Done.” He challenged legal departments to be fast-moving, collaborative, and approachable. In his retirement he served as a board member of UserTesting.com and Adventure Cycling Association.
Ray Bernstein The Santa Clara Law community mourns the loss of of our former colleague, who served as a clinical professor of law at Santa Clara Law from 2007-16. He died on December 18 from injuries suffered in a bicycle accident. Read more.
