Dear Law Alumni and Friends,
I hope this message finds you and your family safe and well. This is a year that we all struggled with the pandemic, worked towards racial justice, survived the economic downturn and natural disasters. It has been a challenge but it has also shown how resilient we are. In this holiday season that is like no other, I am even more grateful for the Santa Clara Law community—faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends that make the work of educating our students possible. While I did not take on this position anticipating all these challenges, I am nevertheless glad that by doing so, I am able to help an institution that I have devoted over 30 years of my professional life to and cherish.
DEAN SEARCH UPDATE
As I look ahead to 2021, we are nearing the end of our national search for a new Dean of Santa Clara Law. Along with our faculty staff and students, I have enjoyed meeting and interviewing our finalists, and we hope to have news to share with you early in the new year. I am deeply grateful for the work of the search committee, led by Professor David Yosifon for bringing us such a stellar slate of candidates.
SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS
When I took over as Interim Dean, one of my first goals is to continue Santa Clara Law’s efforts to diversify the legal profession. To that end, we have increased our scholarships and admitted a more diverse student body than ever before. Once we recruit them, we also must offer them our continued support. Over this past year, our students have needed extra support due to the pandemic and the fires, and that is why we need now, more than ever, your gifts to our Strategic Initiatives Fund. This fund supports a host of needs, most importantly student scholarships, and other critical needs that have arisen in this unprecedented time. Please make a year-end gift to this fund here. Even small gifts make a big difference in the lives of law students who are struggling to pay rent and buy food. We appreciate your support.
VIRTUAL YEAR-END FORUM
While I like to keep my eye on the future, it is also important to look back at this year’s accomplishments and its challenges, as well as how our community united to deal with them. I hope you will join me on December 15, from 12-1 pm PST, for a Virtual Forum. At this event, I will share some reflections on our past year as well as some holiday cheer. I hope to see you there!
I send you and your family warm wishes for a peaceful and safe holiday season and all the best wishes for the new year!
With best wishes,
Interim Dean, Santa Clara Law
